About this book
Published Mistakes: Mathematical Errors in Pakistani Research Journals is a collection of blog posts by Mustafa Salman. Each post takes a single published research paper in the mathematical sciences, identifies an error in it, and explains why it matters.
Every post follows the same structure: the paper is identified by its bibliographic details, its claim is stated, the error is found and explained, a concrete counterexample or numerical demonstration is given where possible, the correct result or argument is stated, and the significance of the error is discussed. The papers come from journals published in Pakistan or edited from Pakistan, and none had been retracted or corrected at the time of writing.
Topics include b-metric fixed point proofs, the KdV equation and the Laplace decomposition method, Adomian-type polynomials in fluid flow models, Legendre polynomials, fractional iterative and numerical schemes, subdivision schemes, sliding mode control, stability regions of iteration processes, topological indices of graphs, difference equations, contraction mapping, Schauder and Krasnoselskii fixed point theorems, Lyapunov functions for epidemic models, and Atangana-Baleanu fractional operators. The book ends with a bibliography, a glossary of notation and an index of the papers discussed.
A word of caution from the author: finding an error is not the same as proving a paper worthless. The analysis is the author's own, and it has not been endorsed by any journal, publisher or author of the papers discussed. For researchers, students and referees, and for anyone who reads the referee report before the abstract.
